Heat
A black, flat robot sitting in Cayman sun can have a significant heat problem.
The combination is particularly unfavorable:
- Black absorbs solar radiation very efficiently.
- Flat top = large surface directly facing the sun.
- Cayman ambient temperatures around 30–33°C can translate into surface temperatures of 50–70°C+ in direct sun.
- Batteries are usually the biggest concern. Lithium-ion batteries dislike sustained high temperatures; heat accelerates degradation and, at sufficiently high temperatures, the robot should shut itself down.
- Electronics, cameras/LiDAR, motors, plastics and adhesives can also suffer.
The important distinction is air temperature vs. solar temperature. A robot rated for operation at, say, 40°C ambient might be perfectly happy in 32°C shade but get considerably hotter sitting motionless on dark paving at 1 pm.
For Cayman, I'd make a simple rule: robot works early morning/evening and parks in permanent shade. A little ventilated docking shelter would probably solve most of the issue. A white or reflective cover over the parking location would help enormously too.
If you're talking about the round LiDAR yard-cleaning robot you showed me, I can check its actual operating-temperature specification and see how close Cayman conditions are to its limits.
What about covering the top of a robot with metallic duct tape to reduce it's temperature?
