What’s an Acid?
In chemistry, an acid is just a type of chemical that, when you mix it with water, lets go of hydrogen atoms (really, hydrogen ions—written as H⁺). Imagine the acid is holding a bunch of tiny hydrogen balls, and when it touches water, it tosses some in.
Why Does This Matter?
- Those hydrogen ions (H⁺) floating in the water can change how the water behaves.
- The more hydrogen ions there are, the more "acidic" the water.
- This is measured with the pH scale (pH tells us how many hydrogen ions are in the water):
- Low pH (less than 7): Water is acidic (lots of hydrogen).
- High pH (more than 7): Water is basic/alkaline (not much hydrogen). See base.
Real-life Examples
- Lemon juice: Has an acid called citric acid—when you squirt lemon juice in water, the acid gives up H⁺ ions, making the water taste sour and lowering the pH.
- Vinegar: Has acetic acid; does the same thing.
Why is "more hydrogen" important?
Hydrogen ions are super tiny and very reactive. When they’re in the water, they can cause all sorts of reactions and changes—good for cooking or cleaning, bad if you want to keep your teeth strong!
