What is Glue?
In basic chemistry, glue is a substance that binds materials together by forming a bond at their surfaces. It is a common type of adhesive.
Why Does Glue Work?
At a high level, glue works due to the interplay of chemistry and physics at the interfaces between surfaces. The main reasons glue works are:
Adhesion
This is the ability of the glue to stick to other surfaces. It involves
- Physical attraction (such as van der Waals forces between glue molecules and the surfaces.
- Chemical bonding: Sometimes, glue forms new chemical bonds (like covalent or ionic bonds) with the material’s surface, depending on the type of glue and material.
Cohesion
This is the glue sticking to itself, forming a continuous film or network. This is because glue molecules are attracted to each other and form a strong internal structure as the glue sets (dries or cures).
Setting Mechanisms
Glues typically set, or harden, in one of a few ways:
- Evaporation of a solvent (like in white glue, where water evaporates and the glue hardens)
- Cooling (as in hot glue)
- Chemical reaction (such as epoxy, which requires mixing two components that react and harden)
Surface Penetration
Glue often soaks into tiny pores and crevices on the surface of the materials. When it sets, it physically "locks" the surfaces together in addition to chemical attraction.

Think of glue as both a double-sided sticky tape (adhesion) and a net that becomes rigid (cohesion) as it dries.
