Whitebox Testing

Another useful approach for regression testing interfaces is called whitebox analysis. In this method, the code of each existing interface is systematically broken down into a logical 'flow'. We examine how data moves through every part of the interface, including any transformations (maps), and each identified message type. The goal is to figure out what code needs to be exercised in order to test every possible branch or path in the interface.

For example, suppose there is a Python script used in an interface—how can we make sure every part of that script gets executed during testing?

A major advantage of whitebox testing is that it can be done safely in a lab environment, well away from production. This means we can thoroughly test each code path without any risk to live systems. In many cases, whitebox analysis can uncover flaws or bugs in rarely used code branches—issues that might not show up in production because those code paths are not normally activated.

One key question is: Do these untested branches contain valuable business logic, or are they simply potential sources of failure waiting to be discovered in production?
